Introducing the Paradigm Policy Lab

September 26, 2023 | Rodrigo Seira and Brendan Malone, Co-Heads of the Policy Lab

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the Paradigm Policy Lab, a vibrant gathering place for academics, policy experts, lawyers, and technologists.

The Policy Lab, the first of its kind in crypto, applies deep research and analytical thinking to the world of policy.

Over the past year, Paradigm has established itself as a policy leader, engaged in everything from fighting for crypto in court, to convening opinion leaders, to publishing policy-centric research.

In seeking to shift the policy landscape for crypto, the Policy Lab is guided by three key principles:

  1. Crypto advocacy should be based on sound research and technical reality—facts over fluff.
  2. The best policy research combines a multidisciplinary lens with deep technological expertise. It is close to the metal.
  3. There are no substitutes for humility, iteration, and crypto nativity.

Co-led by Brendan Malone and Rodrigo Seira, the Policy Lab will bring together academics, policy experts, lawyers, and technologists to produce cutting-edge research, commentary and advocacy on the most critical policy issues facing crypto and other frontier technologies.

As part of this effort, we are announcing the Academic Fellowship Program and its two inaugural fellows, Primavera De Filippi from Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center and Agostino Capponi from Columbia University. Primavera and Agostino will study “regulatory equivalence,” which is the comparability of legally-bounded and technologically-bounded systems and how the same policy outcomes can be achieved through regulation or through technological architecture.

In addition, the Policy Lab will host a Research Hub that is designed to uncover and tackle discrete policy questions relevant to the future of the crypto ecosystem. We view this research (and mechanism) as essential to help policy makers address the novel issues raised by crypto while fostering innovation in the United States. In line with Paradigm's values, the program is designed to be highly collaborative and will be open to the public.
